The large-scale offensive currently being carried out by Syrian Islamists from HTS and Syrian militias acting as auxiliaries to the Turkish army—at the instigation and with the multifaceted support of Ankara—poses a grave danger to the lives of some 200,000 Kurdish civilians in the Aleppo province and Tall Rifaat, as well as to the remaining Christian population in the region.

HTS, an offshoot of the al-Nusra Front, the Syrian branch of al-Qaeda, armed and supported by Turkey, is a radical Islamist organization seeking to establish an Islamic Emirate in Syria. It is highly hostile to the Kurds, who have a secular tradition and are considered infidels by the group. Over 50,000 Kurdish civilians have already been forced to flee Aleppo province, which has fallen under the control of HTS, dubbed “ISIS 2.”

Following this extensive offensive on Aleppo, Turkey is preparing an attack on the remaining Kurdish-controlled territories of Rojava, should the international community remain silent and inactive.

The alternative to the dictatorial and bloodthirsty regime in Damascus should not be an Islamic Emirate beholden to Turkey.
