To help the victims of the terrible earthquake which has officially killed 54,580 people and injured more than 129,794 in the Kurdish cities of Turkey, Afrin and Aleppo, you can send your donations in cash, cheques or bank transfers (on our website) to the Kurdish Institute with the mention "Aid to the victims".

Aid in kind is not possible because the Turkish authorities block it and oblige donors (States, NGOs) to go through the Turkish government agency AFAD.

The United Nations agencies are now mobilising to provide tents and container shelters. For its part, Iraqi Kurdistan has sent the first aid to more than 100,000 families affected by the disaster in Kurdish towns in Turkey and in the canton of Afrin. More than 11,500 rescue workers from around 100 countries are beginning to leave the region to make way for bulldozers to clear the ruins and no doubt clear thousands more victims. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have pledged to help Syria, while France has announced €12 million in aid to NGOs operating mainly in areas controlled by various Syrian opposition militias.

The surge of international solidarity is important but remains very insufficient compared to the needs of a stricken population. All the more so because of corruption, nepotism and the well-known disorganisation of the official Turkish services, aid does not always reach the most needy victim.

The solidarity campaign that we are organising aims to help, in a modest measure given the scale of the disaster, the most needy victims.

The cash donations collected by the Kurdish Institute are entirely given to local NGOs helping the victims, with priority given to children. The local NGOs, organised in groups, are very active on the spot and show dedication and inventiveness in providing urgent relief. The needs are enormous, with more than a million homeless people having to leave their destroyed or uninhabitable homes. Children are particularly vulnerable because of the freezing temperatures in the region. There are already hundreds of orphans.

Every donation counts and makes a valuable contribution to the collective effort of a stricken but resilient society.
